Today we had a fun and easy lunch that was equally retro kitsch and innovative: sugarplum ham steaks made with Dr. Pepper. Nigella Lawson has a famous recipe for ham in Coca Cola. She then created this abbreviated version using ham steak, which I used as the base for this, changing the Coke to Dr. Pepper and altering the spices. Here's my version; serves two . . .
Ingredients:
1 can Dr. Pepper
1 ham steak, about half an inch thick
1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 dash Tabasco
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground ginger
A good grinding of black pepper
Step 1. Put all ingredients except ham in a sauce pan and boil until it has reduced by about half.
Step 2. Put the ham steak in a dry skillet over medium heat. Pour about half the sauce onto the ham (use the rest to make beans later -- really good!).
Step 3. Cook the ham for about 5 minutes on each side.
