What I wore today 09/29/2011 (Downton Abbey hair)

IMG_1674

You may remember I mentioned my Downton abbey obsession recently. Well, today it wanted to express itself through my hairstyle. I went with this look, which is kind of a combination of a few of the looks I see on the show: the way Mary's hair is always tucked up and the headbands Sybil and Lavinia have worn.

What do you think? Did I manage to capture the spirit in a modern way?

Since the hair is a little formal today, I wanted to wear a simple outfit. I've always loved pink and gray together; even when I was a little girl, and I had a board game that had a gray piece and a pink piece, I remember always holding them together and thinking it looked so nice.

DIY tasseled lion pillow

I bought this pillow at the thrift store today. I loved the lion face on it. It reminded me of how Coco Chanel's apartment is full of lion things. However, I felt it was a little plain and kind of seemed like a child's favorite pillow that they take with them to summer camp as a security blanket or something.

I needed to make it more elegant and sophisticated. So, I added tassels.

What I wore today 09/28/2011 (Classic casual)

I thought I'd like to show you guys an everyday casual outfit for an uneventful day. When I wear a casual outfit, I like to keep things simple but elegant by combining classic pieces in good neutral shades.

This outfit is more or less representative of my fall uniform: straight-leg Gap jeans tucked into some kind of knee length boot with a warm sweater or blazer up top.

This Aran fisherman's sweater is one of the first Anthropologie pieces I ever owned. My dad picked it out for me as a Christmas gift back when I was in high school. I love it. It's not something I would have picked out for myself at the time when surrounded by so many fancy dresses with fun prints and detailing. But, as it turns out his good taste paid off because it's still one of my favorite wardrobe staples.

Fashion in the News: Nike releases Back to the Future kicks

This is the second installment of a segment I call Fashion in the News. You can see the first here.

So, if you've been reading this blog with any regularity, you know how much I love movies and what a big inspiration they are to me fashion-wise. (Just click the "movies" tag at the bottom of this post if you don't believe me.) Well, apparently I'm not the only one, because sneakerheads and Back to the Future fans alike have been demanding Nike Mags for almost three decades now. If you don't know what I'm talking about, then you are a very sad person and you need to immediate watch all three Back to the Future movies immediately. And, when you're done, watch them all again. And, after that, watch the second one several more times.

Nike Mags, as many of you will recall, are the ultra-futuristic kicks that made Mary McFly exclaim, "Power laces! All right!" 2015 may still be four years away, but Nike Mags are already here (well, ones that don't really have magnetic functions or power laces, but still look pretty cool).

Nike released 1,500 pairs to be auctioned on Ebay over the course of ten days. They sold for tens of thousands a pair, and all of the proceed's went to fund Parkinson's research. Kanye West was one of many to score a pair.

And yes, they may be a bit ugly (though not quite as ugly as those shutter glasses Kanye used to wear all the time), but they are still cool. They may not be my style, but I definitely understand the feeling of seeing some piece of clothing in a movie and just dying to have it.

In fact, I am currently in a state of obsession over the Edwardian fashions of Downton Abbey, which I lovely nearly as much as the program itself. I am especially fond of the oldest daughter Mary's wardrobe. I even too screenshots of this dress she wore in the season one finale to a garden party so that I can make myself a shorter version of it. The stripes are so my style.

I'm also so in love with her riding hat that I swear I'm going to make one and then take up riding just so that I can wear it. And, even then, people will be asking me why on earth I'm wearing such a thing. It's just absolute perfection, isn't it?

Oh, what would I do without movies and fashion?

Featured in IFB's Links à la Mode

A huge thanks to IFB (Independent Fashion Bloggers) for featuring my first Missoni outfit post in the most recent installment of Links à la Mode.

What's Old is New... Again.

Edited By: Jessica Thorpe

The saying, "what comes around, goes around" has been proven throughout the history of fashion. Stylish peeps the world over have been stimulated by trends of decades passed time and time again. This weeks Links A La Mode is influenced by your interpretation of fashion fads and trends interpreted to suit our modern world.

The funky 70's boho glam look is in full effect with flowing skirts, high waist lines and chunky platforms. Another trend making a loud avant garde blip on my radar is the classic ladylike look of the 50's and 60's. Women are embracing their curves and enhancing them with shape flattering silhouettes. Lastly, current fashion do's that continue to inspire me are clever use of sheer, crochet, macrame and lace fabrics. And last but not least, retro accessories are back in a huge way; statement bangles, fanny packs and cat eye shades are loud on the fashion forefront.
