Ups and downs in my fashion history

I'm on vacation in Park City, Utah right now and, as I'm skiing and snowboarding, I don't have a lot to show you outfit-wise or DIY-wise this week. (Unless you want to see my ski pants, which are Spyder brand and actually quite lovely).

However, I was looking back through some old photos on facebook today and found myself reminiscing about many of the outfits in the photos (the people too, of course, but this blog has a focus - haha)

For example, I came across photos of myself in two tops that I had forgotten about and now really want to wear again. They must be somewhere in storage at my parents' place and I am determined to find them now and wear them this spring and summer.

There's this one. I'm so plaid obsessed.
(BTW, this is me smoking hookah in a Bedouin tent in the middle of the Jordanian desert two summers ago.)

And this one, which doesn't look like much from the front but is open in the back.

I also started reminiscing about several old favorite dresses that meant so much to me.

Like this dress that I wore to my high school graduation and to a million other events. I bought it 5 or 6 years ago and it still gets regular action.

(It has a cute back too, but I don't have a picture. Open backs and back detailing are some of my biggest fashion obsessions.)

There's also this vintage dress that was never mine (I rented it for prom) but that I remember as a fond friend all the same.

Or this beauty that my mother made for me to wear to senior prom based on something Naomi Watts had worn to the Oscars that year.

The inspiration:

My mom's DIY version:

Of course, there were also a lot of fashion blunders to remember...

Here I am at 18 wearing leggings with a denim skirt like a trend-hypnotyzed sheep.

Here I am wearing purple track pants in public.

After watching Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind too many times, I thought it would be a good idea to own an orange hoodie. It was not.

As an exchange student in japan, I wore these pajama bottoms during the day. Oh God, I can't believe I just admitted that.

I think that it's important to remember that our fashion history is a part of us, but that it's okay for our style to change and develop and hopefully become more pronounced and personal. You should remember all your fashion triumphs and embarrassments and let them inform you as you move on to new fashion territory.

  2. Ha ha, your confession just reminded me of an American exchange student I knew in university, she used to go to lectures in her pyjama bottoms, which I gather is the norm in America (at least as some colleges), but here it's really... unusual. To say the least.

My hideous fashion moment is a red mesh vest worn with black trousers and white trainers to a rock club. With sweatbands and gummy jewellery and all of that crap. WHY.

  5. I'm reading a fashion memoir at the moment called A Life in Frocks. Your post reminds me of it, so I wonder if you might like it?
