What I wore today: 03/04/2012 (Nautical Turban)

Nautical turbin outfit: leather boots, straight-leg Gap jeans, striped Converse tunic, braided leather belt, Kelly bag, silk scarf worn as turbin

Here's another way to keep Nautical from looking too cliché: add an unexpected element (like a turban) to give the look a new twist. Literally . . . twisting is what keeps the turban up. :)

Some will say wearing a silk scarf as a turban is ridiculous. I'm prepared for that reaction. In fact, I was even a bit nervous Ryan wouldn't like it, though it turned out that he did. Part of fashion, for me at least, is trying new things and taking risks. Otherwise you get bored, and style never changes or evolves.

For those not familiar with it, that behind me is the beautiful skyline of my hometown, Cincinnati, as seen from the Kentucky side of the river. Ryan took these photos just before we saw Wanderlust at the cinema on the levee.

What I wore today: 12/02/2011 (Winter Sailor)

I rediscovered these lovely thrifted shoes the other day and just had to wear them even though it's a bit cold for nautical.

What I wore today 08/16/2011 (jockey-chic)

I've been re-watching old Mad Men episodes on Netflix recently, and I've been quite inspired by Betty's incredible jockey-chic riding outfits.

I've played around with riding-inspired outfits before, and, when the weather gets colder, I definitely want to do something with boots and a scarf tucked into a crew-neck sweater. But, for now, here's my warm-weather version of the look.

Do you like my vintage '70s Twitter camisole? Gosh, remember how big Twitter was back in the '70s? Here are some of my favorite historic tweets from that time...

@AverageGuy: Bell bottoms are the best pants ever. These are NEVER going out of style!

@Comedian: Just bought a videocassette recorder and wrote what I believe is the first of many jokes about not being able to program it. Also, I may have just invented stand-up comedy.

@Gamer: Wow, Pong is the best thing ever, am I right? #lowexpectations

@Nixon: So, I've decided to delete my Twitter account. ¥-_-¥ Check out my YouTube page for a rap video explaining why. #watergate

What I wore today: 07/13/2011

IMG_8168

I bought this dress a while back, inspired by Joan from Mad Men and her jewel tone wiggle dresses. For a work conference I'm going to today, I decided to pair it with a yellow belt I just bought at Anthropologie (Full disclosure: it was on sale, so I bought a green one and a pink one too. I may have a problem.) in order to partake int he color blocking trend that I'm so admiring of, though I have trouble being bold with color sometimes. Then, I noticed that the colors perfectly complemented my new Pucci scarf. Excellent. The cardigan makes the look work appropriate, though it's so hot outside that I will be wearing it as little as possible. Without the cardigan, the whole thing is a bit more stewardess than young urban professional, and I'm totally okay with that. :)

A dream realized: my first Pucci scarf

IMG_6928

The most exciting thing I purchased at The Outnet was this Pucci scarf. I've long fantasized about owning something authentically Pucci to make me feel like a 1970s jet setter, and a scarf is about all I've ever thought I could afford. But for 65% off at The Outnet, I was able to realize this dream much sooner than I expected.

Happiness and beautiful things

I've been listening to The Happiness Project in my car and it's gotten me thinking about my own happiness, what I can do to savor it when it comes and what I can to to create more of it. It's an extraordinary power, the ability to make yourself happy.

So today, my first day of rest in a long time has been, in large part devoted to doing things that bring me joy. Of course this means a lot of sitting by the pool reading, but I've also been productive. I hung a belt rack in my closet this morning (Using a power drill honest makes me really happy! - something I discovered working in the scene shop when I was a drama student).

Another thing that makes me really happy is getting packages in the mail. I know I'm not alone there; after all, "brown paper packages tied up with strings" is a line in "My Favorite Things." So it just worked out that this was waiting for me this morning...

Mystery package . . . What could it be?

Here's what it was!

Don't you just love eBay?

Then, as I was doing some cleaning/organization/playing with power tools, I came across a pretty clementines box that I've been wanting to do something with. Then I remembered that I've also been wanting to find a more practical and aesthetically pleasing storage solution for my nail polish . . . and voila!

Now I'm sitting by the pool enjoying a talk glass of lime and basil sparkling water and a Marie Claire I've been trying to find time to read for ages.

Okay, I'm gonna jump in the pool now and get some exercise. Then, more Marie Claire. I hop you are all enjoying your weekends!
