Wedding Week: The Fashion

Wedding Week: The Fashion

We have photos! I'm so excited to share more details of our wedding now that our photos are ready. Every day this week, I'll share a bit about some element of our wedding. Today is all about fashion.

I found my dress at BHLDN (story here). It's the Lita by Catherine Deane. I love how Edwardian it is. I just suits my style perfect. I designed the necklace, inspired by some photos of Edwardian and 1920s designs, and Ryan's mother was lovely enough to make it for me. (Isn't she so talented?) I carried a Kate Spade pencil case as a clutch. After struggling for a while to find the perfect shoes, I realized that I just wanted to wear my favorite vintage leather riding boots with fair isle tights.

With the boots as my something old, the dress as my something new, and my ring as my something blue, I was just missing the something borrowed. I didn't have a plan until the morning of the wedding when my bridesmaid, Sarah, brought over a few of her mother's vintage furs. It was 6º Fahrenheit (-14º Celsius), so they were the perfect cover ups.

The flower crown was a last minute decision too. I tried to make my own veil, and it just wasn't working out, so I called my florist two days before the wedding, and asked  her to make a crown. It was initially too big (it just looked too editorial), and I considered not wearing it, but ending up just hacking it up a bit with scissors.

Ryan wore a custom suit from Indochino with his Asos chelsea boots. He and his groomsmen had raw cotton boutonnieres that I made with Ryan's sister. My mom made my bridesmaid's lavender bouquets. Their dresses are from BHLDN, and their necklaces are from Bauble Bar.

I was inspired to choose gray for the bridesmaids because Ryan said he wanted to wear a gray suit. I think they looked very wintry and elegant. I love how everyone looked when we came together, and it was thrilling to surprise Ryan with my look. He had no idea what to expect.

What I wore today: 10/03/2012 (Swayze)

Swayze outfit: teal and navy dress, fair isle blazer from Anthropologie, leather clogs with faux fur trim, studded bottom bag

For me, fall fashion is about rich colors, cozy knits, layering, and pattern mixing

This lovely Fair Isle blazer is part sweater part blazer, so Ryan has taken to calling it my Swayze. I think it's a really special piece and I love that the knit alternates between stripes of right-side-out and wrong-side-out Fair Isle.

There's something so beautiful about the exposed underside of fabric. It tells a story of secrets exposed, vulnerability, and the craftsmanship that goes into a garment. Also it looks cool.

What I wore today 09/13/2012 (Windy City)

Chicago outfit: magenta tights, Corso Como quilted leather boots, kelly green jersey dress, Calf-hair leopard belt, teal velvet blazer, studded bag

Ryan and I just got back from an incredible trip to Chicago. I'll post soon with lots of photos, but for now, here's one of the outfits I wore while we were there.

I do love a subtle pop of leopard print against a bright, saturated color like kelly green. Don't you?

I definitely need to order some replacement tights. I love this magenta color so much that I can't stop wearing them, even though the holes look really bad at this point.

This teal velvet blazer is definitely a favorite piece for me. See this post for better photos of it and the amazing story behind how it came into my life.

Fictional Fashion Icon: Margot Tenebaum

tumblr_lewmqcZyPs1qc4dvx

It's time once more for a Fictional Fashion Icon. Today, I'd like to talk about Margot Tenenbaum.

Margot is indeed an icon. I've seen many a fashionista hold up a vintage fur coat and exclaim how they'd love to wear it and "feel just like Margot Tenenbaum," and her name comes up in the description of virtually every vintage striped polo dress listed on Etsy.

For a character who dresses almost like an animation (in the same thing all the time), she sure has been influential and inspiration to fashion lovers everywhere; you don't see people scouring vintage shops looking for a dress just like Lisa Simpson's, but everyone wants to look like Margot.

Her basic look hasn't changed since she was a kid: straight, all-one-length, blonde hair with a barrette at the side, and dark eyeliner. It's so wrong that it's right.

And her outfit hasn't changed either: blue, striped polo dress; and a huge, brown fur coat. And don't think we didn't notice that Birkin, Margot.

In fact, the only time we see her in anything but her signature dress and coat, it's a nude colored slip that hugs her slim body and makes her look both washed out and fabulous.
