What I wore today: 03/09/2013 (La Marinière)

I will always feel a pull toward simplicity, toward the effortless timelessness of dark jeans and une marinière. In fact, striped shirts are such all-stars in my wardrobe, that, much like with gray sweatshirts, I am constantly buying new ones, often each with its own little variation on the classic look. 

There's the black, white, and mint one I wore here, and the red and white one I wore here, the cashmere sweater version see here, and the dress and tunic versions seen here and here. 

In this outfit, a boatneck-framing ruffle does the legwork. Of course accessories always keep a simple outfit from looking boring. I'm a big believing in piling on the bracelets and the rings. 

Ryan and I took these photos outside on a unseasonably warm Saturday after running in the park. I hope you enjoyed your weekend as much as I enjoyed mine!

I'm currently working on a fresh design for the blog that should give it a whole new, clean look. I've been wanting this for a while, and I am very excited about the direction the design process is taking. I can't wait share it with you!

What I wore today: 11/03/2012 (Knit Two)

Layering a skirt over a dress is a great way to change up your look. Suddenly the dress becomes a top and gets twice the mileage it would get. And layering a sweater skirt over a sweater dress has the added bonus of keeping you nice and toasty warm. 

This dress (seen in full here) and skirt are both fine-gauge wool knits of about the same thickness, and since the skirt is a bit longer and much fuller, layering them worked perfectly. I felt many of the same sentiments expressed in this post about the delightful surprise of layering pieces in a way that makes them look totally different than they ever did before. It's fun to surprise yourself sometimes, isn't it?

A note on the necklace: it has green beads on it, so I often wear it backwards to show only the neutral metallics. I love that it can be worn either way! A friend at Anthro who has one too gave me the idea, a brilliant stroke I wish I could claim myself. Thanks, Kendal! (See the necklace worn with the green facing out here).

What I wore today: 12/18/2011 (moving house)

As half my wardrobe is still across town, and the majority of my shoes are in boxes, my outfits haven't been the greatest as of late. (But, we're almost moved in so -- along with holiday preparations and balancing work -- it's been a productive week!)

However, yesterday we took a short break from move-in madness to attend a family gathering for this little guy's second birthday as well as his dad's more than second.

I mean, when someone invites you to be anywhere near that adorable face (not to mention Veggie Tales cake), you don't turn them down.

So, to make myself presentable for Ryan's family (and a cheeky outfit shoot just before), I decided to layer, layer, layer and see how it went. It ended up being a pretty cute outfit don't you think? Neutral layers are such a good emergency standby; I don't know what I'd do without them.

Work to play:

My office doesn't have a strict dress code, but I usually wear something more business-y. Today, though, I just wasn't feeling dress pants. I wanted to wear a summer dress!

I'm at work now, but I'm performing tonight at The Big Reveal (a storytelling show), so that she be fun.

What I wore today: 04/29/2011

I've admired the double-denim trend since I first saw it, but didn't have a chance to partake until now because I didn't have a denim shirt. This one is just my style: a perfect blend of menswear-inspiration and feminine detailing.

The key to doing double denim without looking like you're wearing a Canadian Tuxedo/Texas Tuxedo (apparently both are acceptable terms), is to choose denim in two very different shades.

My outfit for today was also loosely inspired by the 1970s, because Ryan and I are going to a skating party tonight and skating also makes me think of the '70s. I don't have a nice pair of high-waisted jeans yet (I've been kicking myself for not grabbing a great vintage pair when I had the chance a few years back), but the shape of these is still '70s-ish.
