Fictional Fashion Icon: Annie Hall

Fictional Fashion Icon: Annie Hall

Even though one of them is fictional, the three women that come to your mind first, when I mention women who look sexy in menswear, are probably Marlene Dietrich, Katharine Hepburn, and Annie Hall. You may also have thought of Lady Gaga, but I don't mean women in drag; I mean women who look like the sexy women that they are while wearing a suit.

It's a testament to her style that Annie Hall can hold her own next to such icons as Dietrich and Hepburn. And it's a testament to Diane Keaton, because, after all, there's a lot of Keaton in Hall.

Like last month's Fictional Fashion Icon, Alex from Flashdance, Annie Hall has had a huge influence on fashion, and Annie's almost timeless style remains relevant decades after it first made a splash. Her neutral color palette, baggy-and-cinched silhouettes, and whimsically sexy take on menswear continues to inspire generation after generation of fashion-loving movie viewers.

Yes, the late '70s was a magical time for fashion, and almost everyone looked pretty awesome -- I mean, Woody Allen's outfits in the film are pretty fantastic too -- but Annie's style is a cut above you average '70s-chic ensemble. She has a unique point of view and she's not afraid to dress differently than everyone else.

And it's her signature pieces that endure: her vests, her wide-brimed hats, her scarves, her amber-tinted glasses, and the way she layers spaghetti-strap camisoles and dresses over t-shirts.

What I wore today: 03/14/2012 (Ryan's Shirt)

If you follow me on Instagram, then you may have noticed I was soaking up the rays in downtown Cincinnati's fountain square yesterday, and enjoying the fact that it was warm enough for both Starbucks iced passion tea and sandals.

It's sandal weather!

I do think there's something so classically sexy about a woman in a man's shirt. I borrowed Ryan's yesterday, tucking it into a vintage shirt that had a fitted waist to temper the oversized bulkiness of it, and I felt great all day.

Part of that was also the lovely sunny weather we had. Spring has announced itself with vigor, showing up one day as clear and sunny skies, the next as a thunderstorm. But that's spring for you. I'm just glad it's here.

My picks from the upcoming Missoni for Target collection

I am very excited about the Missoni for Target collection (launching September 13th). I love designer collaborations, and Missoni is one of my all-time favorite design houses, so this particular one is a dream come true. I've even set up an alert on my iPhone so that I don't miss opening day. If the buzz is anything to judge by, I'm sure the collection will be selling out fast. If you're interested, you can see the whole collection here.

These my favorite pieces...

And, of course, there's the most talked about piece in the collection: the bike. Love it.

What I wore today 08/15/2011 (Pinstripes) and my summer playlist

IMG_9980

I made this skirt from the shirt sleeves of a men's shirt I got at the thrift store. I have a couple more like it, including those seen here, here, and here. It's really easy. You basically just cut off the sleeves of two men's shirts. Cut them up the side, sew them all together and sew a hem. The cuff bottoms become the skirt's fasteners.

Sleeveless eyelet button-up - thrifted from a Goodwill in Austin
DIY skirt - made from the sleeves of two thrifted mens shirts
Pink leather belt - Anthropologie
Pinstripe canvas lace-ups - Big Buddha, some department store in Louisville (bought on this fun outing)

* * *

I am always compiling playlists of songs that I find myself listening to a lot during a certain timeframe. Here's the one for this summer so far...
