What I wore today: 12/12/2014 (Black and Tan)

Black and tan outfit: high-waisted black jeans, partial-laceup leather Frye boots, J.Crew camel-colored cashmere long-sleeve tee, quartz necklace, Madewell black and tan colorblock streetcar coat

Black and tan is my favorite color combination right now. I know some of you are probably thinking that black and tan aren't even real colors, so allow me to explain.

I've mentioned my love of neutrals (and, by association, Madewell) before, but I haven't really said all I want to say on the subject. You see, I realized recently that neutrals are the introverts of the color world.

I often hear people express the opinion that colors are happy and neutrals are sad, that colors are exciting and neutrals are boring, that colors express personality and neutrals express conformity. But, all I hear in these opinions is the same extrovert-privileging perspective that saturates all aspects of American society to the detriment of us all.

Yes, colors are loud and neutrals are quiet, but there's nothing wrong with being quiet. In fact, when color is stripped away, it's easier to notice the subtler design aspects underneath, such as silhouette, texture, and material.

I must admit that, as an introvert who loves neutrals, as a person who invited only 50 guests to her wedding and chose gray bridesmaid dresses, I sometimes take it personally when people bash neutrals as "boring" or "lazy."

I like a certain effortlessness, yes, but I am not a lazy person. Just because I chose a black and tan coat, a beige sofa, or a solid gray linen comforter, doesn't mean I didn't pick those pieces with care, consideration, and a desire to express my authentic self. Of course, there's nothing wrong with choosing color if that's what you like (for the record, my other sofa is purple), but colors aren't inherently superior anymore than extroverts are.

The point is that the world benefits from a balance of color and neutrals, extroverts and introverts, noise and quiet. Don't bash the quiet corners of the world.

What I wore today: 02/20/2013 (Horizontal)

Horizontal outfit: vegan leather pants, brown leather boots, black white and mint striped marinière shirt, black cashmere pashmina, cameo pin, Lauren by Ralph Lauren bag, DIY horizontal-zipper coat

I bought this coat at a thrift shop a couple days ago and added the horizontal zipper myself. (Stay tuned for a tutorial, coming Friday).

One of my favorite unexpected color combinations is red and mint, and I like the way the flecks of red in this coat play off the mint stripes on my shirt.

It's very cold today. I'm staying in and studying French. Hope your week is going well!

What I wore today: 01/02/13 (Not a Luxury)

Fashion is Not a Luxury Outfit: Bitten t-shirt, Anthropologie mixed-print skirt, black tights, black sneaker wedges, Urban Outfitters navy peacoat with black leather sleeves, Anthropologie pavé ball and pyramid earrings

Here's another classic day-off outfit for me. I like to take advantage of the opportunity to wear my favorite non-work-appropriate things like t-shirts and sneaker wedges whenever I can.

I'm happy to report that this skirt, so loved in summer (seen here and here) has made an easy transition into winter with the help of some thick tights.

Also, if you haven't worn mismatched stud earrings yet, I recommend it. It's a great way to avoid deciding between two pairs, and it also extends the life of earrings you've lost the mates to.

What I wore today: 10/27/2012 (Alice)

Alice outfit: rosebud dress, grayscale color-block over-the-knee socks, flatforms, cropped paper-thin cashmere sweater from Styemint,

Ryan and I went to the Cincinnati Ballet on Saturday to see their production of Alice in Wonderland, which was wonderful. The ballet is one of those things that we both really enjoy doing together. I love that Ryan has such appreciation and enthusiasm for something is a passion of mine and was, at one time, a big part of my life.

I usually dress up quite a bit for the ballet, but I felt like being warm and comfortable, so I landed on this outfit, which seemed to strike the perfect chord for me that night. I especially like the drape of the cropped cashmere sweater over the dress.

New business cards and wardrobe staples

I have a couple exciting new things to show you. First, there's these lovely new wardrobe staples purchased from Nordstrom's "Next Season On Sale Now" event: a pair of lovely quilted leather boots and a perfect black cashmere boatneck sweater.

I'm a believer in investment pieces: timeless and high quality basics that will last forever. A good rule of thumb is that you should spend the most money on the clothes you spend the most time in. Therefor, shelling out a little extra for a pair of quality boots that you'll wear at least three times a week from September to March is worth it because you're spending very little on for each time you wear them. The place to save money and go cheaper is for a pair of fancy colored satin heels you might only find the occasion to wear once of twice a year.

The next thing to show is my new business cards that arrived in the mail today. They're from moo.com and I absolutely love them. I would especially recommend moo to fashion bloggers, photographers, designers, artists, or any one else who might like to include photos on their business cards. It definitely makes them stand out.

They arrived in this snazzy business card box . . .

I'll leave you with this photo I took earlier this week. It's not of something I bought but it is of something precious in my life
