What I wore today: 10/07/2013 (People Are Like Onions)

Fall layered outfit: Red corduroys, Jeffrey Campbell "Everly" ankle boots, sleeveless chambray shirt, lace-front sweatshirt, lace-embellished military jacket, cross-body Phillip Lim for Target bag

There's enough to love about fall with the apple cider and the PSLs and the changing leaves and the brisk breezes; layering doesn't even need to be a thing. But layering is a thing. It's a glorious thing. And it's one of the many, many things that I love about fall.

If you're a bit hesitant about layering, I feel you. It can definitely be intimidating at first. But, I've found that, the more I experiment, the better I get. Eventually, you just get a sense of what items will layer well together or what piece you can add to any given ensemble to pump it up just a touch more.

As with most things in life, practice makes perfect. It also makes totally rad fall outfits.

What I wore today: 11/04/2012 (Black and Tan)

Black and tan outfit: thrifed 1990s black velvet mini dress, Jeffrey Campbell flatforms, American Apparel punctuation tights, leopard print horse-hair belt, studded-bottom belt, Peter-Pan collar necklace

Truth time: Approximately 30 seconds after taking these photos, I tripped on my flatforms and, in my (thankfully successful) efforts to save my camera, ended up skinning the ever-loving-beJESUS out of both my knees and completely ruining these tights. They are now both shredded and bloodstained. They have been put to rest with highest honors.

So, the truth is that, for most of the day, I wore different, much less cute, tights. But I still had to share my intentioned outfit for the day. I like the idea of taking a simple black-and-tan color palette and executing it throughout my outfit (belt, shoes, tights). The tights, a favorite, will be replaced, mark my words. I can't live in a world without punctuation tights!

"They look like your legs are cursing," was Ryan's reaction when he first saw them. Ohhhhhhhh, how I want them back!

For now, though, my legs are cursing out loud and uncensored. I seriously wrecked my knees. Ouch.

What I wore today 11/01/2011 ($#&@!)

After wearing so many browns and mustards and oranges as Halloween approached, today felt like a good day to go back to black.

Aren't these tights amazing? They always make people do double takes, and I love it. A few years ago I never would have worn something so eye-catching and weird, but I'm a lot more comfortable with myself now and I love that feeling.

Happy All Souls Day, everyone!

* * *

This is an outfit of comfortable favorites. You've seen the shoes about a zillion times, and the dress is an old favorite that I once even wrote a poem about for a school assignment.

It's not one of my best poems, but, as it's relevant here, I'll share . . .

Dresses

This Goodwill smells like dust
and cement. Horrible music is
playing. The metal hangers,
digging into my arm, leave black,
oily marks on my wrists.

Inside the dressing room—floor covered
with rejected clothes—I try on my findings.
A navy United Airlines stewardess dress
squeezes my ribs too tight
and spreads across my angry hips
in pull-lines, like sand-ridges across a vast desert.

But the short, black, velvet dress hugs me right,
caresses my waist and grazes my hips,
like a lover, leading a ballroom dance.

What I wore today 10/22/2011 (Floral blazer)

I like how the icy blue green of this deep-V American Apparel tee plays with the same notes in the blazer. Oh, color!

You've seen these jeans a lot lately, and I'm actually wearing them again now as I type this. I can't help loving them so much. They make my legs look longer than long and I love how versatile they are - I can wear them with crop-tops and regular-length tops alike. Lovely.

Mustaches and the Mud-Stash

I have to admit that I find the whole mustache trend pretty adorable. I don't mean guys with actual mustaches, I mean those cute, curly mustaches you see on everything from coffee cups cocktail rings. It's quite a hipster trend I suppose, but I see nothing wrong with that. Here are some of my favorites from Pinterest . . .

My friend Kelly even made her own mustache necklace . . .

And once, during an Underbelly show, Ryan played a character call Indie Rock Devil (wearing a devil hat I knitted for him) and tried to get a hipster to sell his soul for American Apparel deep-V t-shirts, fixed gear bicycles and thick-rimmed glasses, and, when the hipster agreed, Ryan told him, "There's no contract because we keep it indie. You just have to get this tattoo," and then held up his index finger across his upper lip to reveal a mustache tattoo."

Then, last week, Ryan ran in the Mud-Stash, a race with intense obstacles and lots of mud that took place at Perfect North Slopes, the small Indiana resort where I first learned to ski when I was 11.

I'd never been there in the fall before, and I found it was quite beautiful.

Ryan had fun, but he was exhausted and quite beat up by the end. I couldn't see all of the race, but I took photos of what I could.
