DI(fr)Yday: How to make a mirror bra for New Year's Eve or everyday wear

This DIY project is the perfect thing to make any outfit worthy of New Year's Eve. It probably makes most of you think of Lady Gaga, but bloggers Andy Torres and Chiara Ferragni provide perfect inspiration for how to make the look wearable.

Here's how to make yours . . .

You will need:

- A plain black bra in your size

- A hot glue gun and glue sticks

- Small square mirrors (available at craft stores) How many you need will depend on your cup size. To give you an idea, I'm a D cup and I needed about 200 half-inch square mirrors.

Step 1. Hot glue the mirrors one by one until you've framed one cup all the way around.

Step 2. Begin the next round by glueing a mirror in each of the three corners and then connection them with rows of mirrors.

Step 3. Continue in this way, beginning each row with three mirrors in the three corners until there is a small triangular space in the center of the cup.

Step 4. Glue mirrors in the three corners of the triangle and then in the free spaces left.

Step 5. When the cup is completely covered, glue mirrors to the second cup in the same way.

More visible bra inspiration

This is one of my favorite new trends and one of the hardest to get right. I've written about it a few times on here, but here's some more inspiration.

Harry Potter and the visible bra

Here's another tip for working the visible-bra trend without looking trashy: rock two trends at once with a lace top. The added coverage of the lace makes the overall look a bit more modest. Take your cues from Emma Watson's fabulous look at the premiere of the latest Harry Potter.

Visible-bra trend

The visible bra is becoming more and more prevalent in fashion, and I have to say that I like it. With this trend, there is definitely a fine line between classy and trashy, but as long as you stay on the right side of the line, you are good to go.

Some may say that it's inappropriate to show underwear, but to them I want to point out that the t-shirt was considered underwear (and inappropriate to show in public) until style leaders like James Dean broke the rules and therefor changed them.

So if you are ready to change the rules, consider taking part in this trent. Though allow me to remind you of the obvious: that like the t-shirt visible bras will probably never be a suitable look for the workplace. (Nothing fun ever is.) :(

Since my bosom is already big enough to catch a little more attention that I always want, I like to embrace this trend in a subtle way with a black bra under a sheer-ish t-shirt. Or, if I go more sheer with it, I add a blazer to keep the look smart. But if you as less well endowed, you can go a little bolder without looking promiscuous. Take your cues from Jane Aldridge of Sea of Shoes, who keeps this sexy trend looking demure, by pairing her visible bra with a longer skirt and boots. (Remember that it's always smart to show off either your bosom or your legs, never both in one look.) The ruffles down the front even add additional coverage.
